Gender and Cultural Practice

The aim of the course is to examine the ways in which ideas of gender actively shape our perceptions, responses and customs in the cultural sphere. Our central concern is the continuing significance to the contemporary world of gender as a marker of difference in society and culture, and as a category of social analysis.

We explore differences within genders as well as between them, and consider how gender intersects with other forms of social division, such as ethnicity, class, nationality and sexuality.

A comparative and historical perspective ensures sensitivity to the variability of gender relations across time and space, and to recent transformations of gender relations.

Specifically, the course participants will investigate the sites of gender identity negotiation (e.g. nation, body, family) and cultural institutions (e.g. television, film, museums, art galleries).

A társadalmi nem jelentései a kultúra gyakorlásának színterein

A kurzus célja, hogy számba vegye azokat a társadalmi nem jelentéséről és szerepéről alkotott vélekedéseket, melyek a kultúra gyakorlása során a „gender”-hez kapcsolódó reprezentációkat és szokásokat befolyásolja. A kurzus ráirányítja a figyelmet arra, hogy a társadalmi nem kategóriája a mai kulturális közegekben a társadalmi különbségek egyik jellegzetes markere, ezért lényeges szerepe van a kultúra elemzésének tárgyaként és módszereként.

A téma összehasonlító módú és történeti perspektívájú feldolgozása a biztosítéka annak, hogy a „gender” kategóriájának térben és időben való változatossága és változtathatósága megértése a kérdés iránti érzékenységet alakítja ki a kurzus résztvevőiben.

A kurzus során különös figyelmet kap azoknak a (valóságos és szimbolikus) kulturális “helyszíneknek” a vizsgálata, melyekben a társadalmi nemhez kötődő identitások kialakulnak, (pl. nemzet, test, család) valamint a kulturális intézmények színerei (pl. film, televízió, képzőművészet).
